Sulphonated asphalt

Sulfonated Asphalt is a specially modified asphaltic chemical used in water-based and oil-based drilling fluids to improve fluid performance under harsh downhole conditions. It is produced by sulfonating natural asphalt with sulfonating agents, which enhances its solubility, thermal stability, and compatibility with various mud systems.

Sulfonated Asphalt is a high-performance shale-stabilizing and fluid-loss-controlling additive designed for use in deep, high-temperature wells. The sulfonation process makes asphalt water-dispersible, allowing it to mix uniformly in drilling mud and work effectively even at temperatures above 200–260°C (392–500°F).

Key Functions

  • 1. Shale Inhibition & Wellbore Stabilization
    • Forms a thin, tough, impermeable film on shale surfaces.
    • Prevents hydration, swelling, and dispersion of reactive shales.
    • Minimizes bit balling and stuck pipe problems.
  • 2. Fluid Loss Control
    • Reduces API and HPHT fluid loss by plugging micro-pores and fractures.
    • Helps maintain wellbore integrity in both soft and fractured formations.
  • 3. Thermal Stability
    • Performs efficiently under extreme downhole temperatures.
    • Remains stable and active without degradation.
  • 4. Lubricity Enhancement
    • Improves lubricity in drilling fluids.
    • Reduces torque and drag in deviated or horizontal wells.
  • 5. Plugging & Sealing Properties
    • Seals micro-fractures and porous zones.
    • Helps prevent differential sticking.
