Cloud Point Glycol

Cloud Point Glycol (CPG) is a specialized water-soluble polymeric additive used in water-based drilling fluids to control shale hydration, stabilize reactive formations, and enhance wellbore stability under a wide range of temperature and salinity conditions. It is designed to produce performance benefits related to inhibition, lubricity, fluid loss control, and thermal stability.

Shale Inhibition

  • Reduces hydration of smectite, illite, and mixed-layer clays.
  • Works by lowering osmotic potential and forming a protective glycol layer on shale surfaces.
  • Prevents shale sloughing, caving, dispersion, and wellbore enlargement.

Cloud Point Osmotic Mechanism

  • As downhole temperature reaches the cloud point, the glycol changes structure.
  • Generates micro-emulsion droplets that:
    • Create a barrier effect on formation surfaces.
    • Reduce filtrate invasion.
    • Improve mechanical stability.

Lubrication

  • Acts as a natural lubricant, lowering torque and drag.
  • Improves ROP in directional and horizontal wells.

Fluid Loss Reduction

  • Reduce API and HPHT filtrate by forming semi-permeable films.
  • Minimizes differential sticking in overbalanced drilling conditions.

Thermal Stability

  • Performs efficiently up to 150–180°C, depending on the grade.
  • Prevents viscosity degradation in high-temperature wells.
